Public Transportation -- clean, fast and cheap!
.......see also car rental, train travel and biking, hiking and walking tours
Public transportation in Europe is fast, clean and very reasonable! Whether your journey requires a subway, a ferrie or a sky gondola, you can explore almost all of Europe without having to rent a car.
Usually, if you buy a rail pass specific to a country, that country's public transportation will be included. This can be quite a savings if you plan to visit a country with several metropolitan areas, and with a variety of lakes (serviced by ferries) and mountain towns (often serviced by gondola). Switzerland is a great example of a country with great train routes and an amazing secondary system.
Many European airports have either a commuter train or subway connecting you to the city. If you can pack light, it's a great way to save a few Euro's and start emmersing yourself in the new culture. It's a great chance to visit with Europeans returning home who are anxious to share with you their "not to miss" places. Some will even want to talk excitedly with you about their trip to America.
